It might seem strange for me to be talking about the UK’s National Security Strategy 2025 and Strategic Defence Review 2025. Many people don’t know that when I was London based I was a member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (PRVC), following in the footsteps of my late grandmother who had served during World War 2. So, our military and defence capability is something that is important to me and that I am interested in.

This weekend I read the UK Government Strategic Defence Review and the UK National Security Strategy. These are not just Government headlines, they are bursting with opportunity for those sectors whose business is providing the critical infrastructure to keep the country safe.

Some of themes that jumped out at me included:

💡 Increased spend on defence in conjunction with modernisation of defence capability.

💡 Radical reform of procurement and advancement of new technology

💡 Placement of the defence sector, along with others such as life sciences, as key engines of economic growth

💡 Building national resilience with a greater emphasis on civil and civic engagement with the military

💡 Mobilisation of Britain’s defence capability at pace if necessary – a new footing of preparedness.

🧩 The defence sector’s increased spend and modernisation demands a systems level view balancing new technology investments, procurement reform, economic ambitions, and national resilience in one integrated approach. Holistic leadership that sees the interplay between technical capability, organisational culture, civic engagement, and strategic readiness.

🔥 Procurement reform and rapid mobilisation at this scale requires accountability at every level leaders who own outcomes transparently, promote ethical risk-taking, and maintain rigorous governance, shared responsibility, strengthening trust both inside organisations and with wider civil society.

⚡ Placing defence as an economic growth engine demands bold innovation and disruption challenging old hierarchies, faster decision-making, and embracing emergent tech with radical candour and psychological safety to cultivate cultures where innovation thrives, failure is a learning opportunity, and strategic risks are intelligently managed.

🌿 Building national resilience and rapid mobilisation also means mindful engagement between military, civil society, and stakeholders navigate complexity recognising diverse histories, and sustainable organisational wellbeing in high-pressure environments.

As an internationally recognised black belt in psychological safety, with experience of leading Government procurement reviews, supporting deployment of ambassadors and defence attaches, and as a keynote speaker at the UK Ministry of Defence I bring a unique and different emphasis on how the sector can cut through complexity and build fearless, aligned teams ready to seize emerging opportunities with clarity and courage.
